Rates of colorectal cancer detection in screening colonoscopy post appendicectomy in patients 50 years and over

ConclusionDespite the advancement in visualization of anatomy with CT scan and laparoscopic appendicectomy there is still a role for screening colonoscopy in patients greater than 50 years of age with appendicitis particularly if they have associated bowel symptoms or risk factors for CRC.

Conclusions: The constantly increasing prevalence of NAFLD in the general population can contribute to a growing role of NAFLD/NASH in HCC epidemiology. Moreover, some particular challenges specific for patients with liver steatosis may impede proper HCC diagnosis, treatment and follow-up. PMID: 31631714 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Conclusions: SIF + XRT caused changes in patterns of endothelial cell death and survival, proinflammatory molecule release, and adhesion molecule expression at early time points post-XRT associated with early reduction of immune cell recruitment. These findings suggest that SIF could mediate its radioprotective effects in irradiated lungs by limiting excessive immune cell homing via vascular endothelium into damaged lung tissue and curtailing the overall inflammatory response to radiation. We report our experience in conservative management of patients with prenatal and neonatal diagnosis of severe bilateral ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO), focusing on the actual predictors of renal function impairment or spontaneous resolution. Between 1996 and 2006, 20 patients with bilateral severe hydronephrosis related to UPJO were included in the study. Indications for surgery were an increased hydronephrosis, decreased renal function, onset of symptoms. Conservatively treated patients were followed up for 3 months to 10 years with renal ultrasound, DTPA diuretic, urine culture. At first renal scan, 22 out of...

Authors: special issue: “Focus on pediatric nephrology”, Scuderi MG, Spampinato G, Milazzo G, Betta P, Fusco M, Arena S, Falsaperla M, Chimenz R, Di Benedetto V Abstract Pelviureteric junction obstruction (PUJO) due to intrinsic or extrinsic causes is a common problem in childhood. Extrinsic compression by a lower pole-crossing blood vessel can present symptomatically in older children. In these cases, laparoscopies Vascular Hitch can represent a valid alternative to pyeloplasty dismembered. We analyzed the data of 4 children affected by extrinsic PUJO treated at our institution with the laparoscopic Va...

This study analyzes the results of laparoscopic nephrectomy for Wilms Tumor (WT) in pediatric age compared with open nephrectomy after 10 years of experience in a single centre. From 1993 in our center of reference for pediatric oncology, 30 patients with WT have been treated. We performed 21 open nephrectomy and in the last 10 years 9 laparoscopic nephrectomy. In all patients treated laparoscopically, the same technique made by the same equip was used. Compared with patients treated by open surgery, we did not find a significant difference in terms of outcome and survival. In the open surgery group, two patients had lung ...

This study aimed to evaluate immunohistochemical expression of cyclin D1 and PSA in breast carcinoma and their relation to prognosis. It includes 79 specimens of breast invasive duct carcinoma. Overall survival time was available for all patients. There is a statistically significant association between positive PSA expression and lower tumor stage, nodal stage and tumor grade and between negative PSA expression and presence of metastasis (P value = .05, 0.01, 0.03 and 0.011, respectively). There is a highly statistically significant association between low percentage of cyclin D1 expression (

Altered miRNA expression participates in the biological progress of thyroid carcinoma and functions as a diagnostic marker or therapeutic agent. However, the role of miR-7-2-3p is currently unclear. The authors' study was the first investigation of miR-7-2-3p expression level and diagnostic ability in several public databases. Potential target genes were obtained from DIANA Tools, and function enrichment analysis was then performed. Furthermore, the authors examined expression levels of potential targets in the Human Protein Atlas (HPA) and the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). Finally, the potential transcription factors (TFs) ...

This study shows the prediction power of association rule mining algorithm over the traditional classifier model without choosing a negative data set. The time complexity of the biclustering-based association rule mining is also analysed and compared to traditional association rule mining. The authors are able to discover 38 new PPIs which are not present in the cancer database. The biological relevance of these newly predicted interactions is analysed by published literature. Recognition of such interactions may accelerate a way of developing new drugs to prevent different cancer-related diseases.

In humans, oxidative stress is involved in the development of diabetes, cancer, hypertension, Alzheimers' disease, and heart failure. One of the mechanisms in the cellular defence against oxidative stress is the activation of the Nrf2-antioxidant response element (ARE) signalling pathway. Computation of activity, efficacy, and potency score of ARE signalling pathway and to propose a multi-level prediction scheme for the same is the main aim of the study as it contributes in a big amount to the improvement of oxidative stress in humans. Applying the process of knowledge discovery from data, required knowledge is gathered an...
