Higher Education R & D Expenditures Increased 4.7%, Exceeded $75 Billion in FY 2017

In FY 2017, higher education research and development expenditures reached $75.3 billion, up 4.7% from FY 2016. Federal funding of higher education R&D increased in both current and constant dollars for consecutive years for the first time since FYs 2009-2011. These data are from the 2017 Higher Education Research and Development (HERD) Survey by the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES) within the National Science Foundation (NSF).
