Controversies in Vaginal Surgery

Over the past 20 years, there has been a substantial rise in the use of surgery for the treatment of stress urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. While the incidence of stress incontinence and vaginal prolapse does increase with age, and the proportion of senior citizens has increased steadily during that time period, the use of surgery has increased more dramatically than is explained by simple increase in disease prevalence.
