Automated Audiometry: A Review of the Implementation and Evaluation Methods.

Conclusions: It seems that automated audiometry produces the same results compared with traditional audiometry. However, the main advantages of this method; namely, saving costs and increased accessibility to hearing services, can lead to a faster diagnosis of hearing impairment, especially in poor areas. This study identifies the prevalence and risk factors of sensorineural hearing loss and primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG).Materials and methods: Patients aged 19 years or older who had undergone both ophthalmologic examination and audiometry as part of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey V (2010-2012) were analyzed. Hearing loss was defined as the pure-tone average over 40 decibels based on the automatic hearing test to determine the threshold of airway hearing for each frequency. We investigated the prevalence of glaucoma and hearing loss when they occurred alone or simultaneously. The risk factors...

Conclusions: Monoclonal antibodies such as benralizumab may be an effective treatment option for EOM. A high level of clinical suspicion in patients with bronchial asthma, nasal polyposis, and recalcitrant OME may allow early diagnosis of EOM. Awareness of emerging biologic treatment options is important in the management of this challenging entity and may prevent long-term sequelae.

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate endolymphatic hydrops using the 3T temporal bone magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), performed according to the chosen protocol, and determine whether it could be applied as an objective diagnostic tool for Menière's disease. Methods: 105 participants diagnosed with probable (n = 50) and definite (n = 55) Menière's disease were included in this prospective study at Vilnius University Hospital, Santaros Clinics. Audiometry, vestibular function tests, videonystagmography, and computer posturography were performed before MRI. The 3T MRI with gadolinium...

The objective of the current study was to characterize tertiary referral center bias in VS research. Study design: Single-institution retrospective clinical, audiometric, and radiologic review. Setting: One tertiary referral center. Patients: One hundred twenty-three patients with sporadic VS treated at our institution, consisting of a local cohort of all 41 VS patients residing in the same US county as our medical center and a referral cohort of 82 patients from outside counties matched 2:1 based on age, sex, and year of diagnosis. Intervention: Surgical resection, stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), observation....

Conclusions: The clinical and audiometric presentations of patients with concurrent otosclerosis and SCD are often indistinguishable from those of patients with only otosclerosis. Computed tomography of the temporal bone is the only way to identify concurrent SCD. Stapedotomy in these patients typically results in a persistent conductive hearing loss, though 14 to 33% of patients experience near-complete closure of their air bone gap. SCD symptoms are unmasked in 57 to 63% of patients who undergo stapedotomy. Further work is needed to delineate the utility of routine preoperative computed tomography scan in otosclerosis ...

Conclusions: Our results cannot lend further support to the existence of ear advantage in CI recipients. We do not recommend the Uttenweiler dichotic listening test to determine lateralization. Further research to gather more information on dichotic listening and ear advantage in CI recipients is necessary and should use consonant-vowel stimuli as more comparable stimuli.

The new Mainz speech test for children 3-7 years old (MATCH) : Design, standardization, and validation. HNO. 2020 Jan 08;: Authors: Schirkonyer V, Keilmann A, Harmuth C, Wachtlin B, Rader T, Bohnert A Abstract OBJECTIVE: To develop a new, German, age-appropriate speech audiometry test for children, by using 26 nouns that are most likely part of the lexicon of 2-year-olds. The test is a picture-pointing task with a four-option non-forced choice method. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In total, 179 children aged 2;11 to 6;9 y were included for standardizing and validating the speech test. Of these, ...

The objective of this study was to investigate the correlation of tinnitus severity and sleep quality prior to tinnitus onset in a Chinese population. We recruited patients with primary tinnitus from a tertiary teaching hospital in southwest China, retrospectively. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Mandarin version of the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI-M) were employed to assess tinnitus severity and sleep quality of past, respectively. A battery of hearing tests was also administered to subjects, including TEOAE, pure tone audiometry, and tympanometry, for hearing evaluation. We enrolled 190 patients and n...
