Local Anesthetic Systemic Toxicity: Reviewing Updates From the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine Practice Advisory

THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF REGIONAL ANESTHESIA (ASRA) and Pain Medicine recently published updated guidance on the management of local anesthetic systemic toxicity (LAST).1,2 Organ systems that are primarily disrupted by toxic doses of local anesthetics include the cardiovascular system and central nervous system (CNS). Mild prodromal symptoms may progress to major complications such as seizures, cardiac arrest, or death. Treatment is multifactorial and involves the use of 20% lipid emulsion therapy as the antidote.
