Lack of effect of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on short-term smoking cessation: Results of a randomized, sham-controlled clinical trial
Tobacco use is one of the leading causes of preventable death and illness worldwide (Global Burden of Disease Research Foundation Collaborators, 2016; WHO, 2017), yet the majority of smokers who want to quit are unable to maintain abstinence even for a few days (Babb et al., 2017; Hughes et al., 2004). Many factors contribute to relapse, and existing treatments offer support for the most prominent factors such as withdrawal symptoms and cravings (Aubin et al., 2014; Piper et al., 2011; Shiffman et al., 2006).
