Median nerve stimulation induces analgesia via orexin-initiated endocannabinoid disinhibition in the periaqueductal gray Neuroscience

Adequate pain management remains an unmet medical need. We previously revealed an opioid-independent analgesic mechanism mediated by orexin 1 receptor (OX1R)-initiated 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) signaling in the ventrolateral periaqueductal gray (vlPAG). Here, we found that low-frequency median nerve stimulation (MNS) through acupuncture needles at the PC6 (Neiguan) acupoint (MNS-PC6) induced an...

Publication date: October 2018Source: European Journal of Integrative Medicine, Volume 23Author(s): Ebru YilmazAbstractIntroductionBecause of no consensus on the best treatment for management of lateral epicondylitis, other alternative treatment options need to be explored for pain relief and cure of the condition. Local steroid injection mostly diminishes pain but with increased recurrence rate long-term, although steroid injection is very effective short-term. However, there is limited data for skin complications related to local steroid injection (depigmentation, skin atrophy). Neural therapy provides healing by applyin...

Authors: Cavalli L, Briscese L, Cavalli T, Andre P, Carboncini MC Abstract Acupuncture therapy has been used to treat several disorders in Asian countries and its use is increasing in Western countries as well. Current literature assessed the safety and efficacy of acupuncture in the acute management and rehabilitation of patients with neurologic disorders. In this paper, the role of acupuncture in the treatment of acute severe acquired brain injuries is described, acting on neuroinflammation, intracranial oedema, oxidative stress, and neuronal regeneration. Moreover, beneficial effects of acupuncture on subacute p...

In this study, we conducted a cross-sectional survey among 419 acupuncturists nation-wide to investigate the top 10 and top 99 acupuncture indications in private clinics in the United States. We found the top 10 indications to be: lower back pain, depression, anxiety, headache, arthritis, allergies, general pain, female infertility, insomnia, neck pain and frozen shoulder. Among the top 99 indications, pain represents the largest category; and mental health management, especially for mood disorders, is in greatest demand. The following popular groups are: immune system dysfunctions, gastrointestinal diseases, gynecology an...

This study determined acupuncture's effect on cancer-related pain and identified variables associated with pain response. METHODS: A retrospective chart review included adult patients with cancer referred to palliative medicine and received acupuncture for pain management. Paired t tests compared differences in pain scores from pre- to postacupuncture. Clinically meaningful pain improvement was defined as ≥2-point reduction in pain score. Logistic regression was used to evaluate associations between patient characteristics and pain improvement. RESULTS: One hundred seventy acupuncture treatments from 68 indivi...
