Characterization of the tumor immune-microenvironment of lung adenocarcinoma associated with usual interstitial pneumonia

A malignant tumor is composed of not only cancer cells but also various types of non-cancerous stromal cells containing cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs), tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), and tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs); such heterogeneous population of cells gives rise to cancer-specific microenvironments [1 –5]. Recent studies have shed new light on this complex interaction between tumor and host immune cells and helped us understand the immune response triggered by this interaction.
