External dosimetry audit for quality assurance of carbon-ion radiation therapy clinical trials.

CONCLUSIONS: The audit demonstrated that the dose at a single point in the water phantom was within tolerance, but it is a big step to say that all doses are correct. In addition, this external dosimetry audit encouraged centers to improve the quality of their dosimetry systems. PMID: 30387294 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Up till now, lung cancer remains as the leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. According to the latest statistical report, there are 2.1  million new lung cancer cases and 1.8 million deaths predicted globally in 2018, nearly close to 1 in 5 (18.4%) of all cancer deaths [1]. China is among the countries with the highest lung cancer rates (above 40 per 100,000). For lung cancer patients, radiotherapy (RT) with or without chemother apy remains to be the fundamental treatment. However, the efficacy of radiotherapy is restrained due to a series of RT-related complications that result in patients’ intolerance.

Authors: Su TT Abstract Ionizing radiation (IR) is used to treat more than half of human cancer patients. The therapeutic effect of IR is due to its ability to induce apoptosis. Success of radiation therapy relies not only on apoptosis induction but also on whether surviving cancer cells proliferate and regenerate a tumor. Drosophila melanogaster is a premier genetic model and, relevant to radiation biology of cancer, Drosophila larvae display an amazing capacity to regenerate. IR doses that kill more than half of the cells in larval tissues still allow complete regeneration to produce an adult fly of normal size a...

Semin Respir Crit Care Med 2019; 40: 347-360 DOI: 10.1055/s-0039-1693406Malignant pleural mesothelioma is a rare cancer associated with asbestos exposure and portends a dismal prognosis. Its worldwide incidence has been increasing, and treatment options are currently suboptimal and noncurative. However, since the turn of the century, several encouraging steps have been made toward improving outcomes for mesothelioma patients. An increased understanding of disease pathophysiology has led to more accurate diagnosis and staging, and the establishment of the standard of care first-line pemetrexed/platin doublet chemotherapy re...
