Body composition changes following a very low calorie pre-operative diet in patients undergoing bariatric surgery
Background: Fatty liver in obese patients is postulated to increase the technical difficulty of upper gastro intestinal surgery. Pre-operative weight loss with a very low calorie diet (VLCD) is commonly used to reduce this and has been confirmed to reduce liver volume and improve operative outcomes. The precise effect of rapid pre-operative weight loss on body composition has not been established.
