Association of pre-operative behavioral measures with antidepressant medications one year after bariatric surgery

Background: Many patients hope to discontinue medications following bariatric surgery, yet little is known about factors associated with antidepressant use after surgery. We conducted a retrospective chart review to examine associations between pre-operative measures (e.g., anxiety, depression, and somatic symptom scales of the Personality Assessment Inventory) and change in antidepressant medication prescription from baseline to one-year post-operatively. Of 216 patients (90.0% gastric sleeve), 95 (44.0%) were never prescribed an antidepressant, 90 (41.2%) stayed on the same antidepressant, 20 (9.2%) added, increased, or changed medications, and 11 (5%) decreased or discontinued antidepressant medication.
