Earlier in my career, I tried play therapy for young children with trauma-related problems. Sadly, since avoiding traumatic reminders is part of the syndrome of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), I found that young children would not voluntarily talk about or re-enact traumatic events in the nondirective process of play therapy. This seemed to me not only inefficient, but ineffective. Thus I turned to cognitive behavior therapy (CBT). The directiveness of CBT seemed better suited to the developmental capacities of young children to help them express their thoughts and feelings.
