Fishing for new leads in a rare melanoma

(Boston Children's Hospital) Many cancers arise from a double hit: activation of a tumor-promoting gene plus loss of a tumor suppressor gene. A new study shows that zebrafish, a versatile model for disease research and drug discovery, can help tease out the interplay of genetic alterations in cancer, and could help guide treatment strategies. The study involved mucosal melanomas, a rare, poorly understood and often deadly type of melanoma that affects internal surfaces of the body.
