Nonpharmacological pain therapy for chronic pain.

This article describes some of the nonpharmacological treatment options and their evidence (e.g. physical therapy, massage, manual therapy, electrotherapy, acupuncture and music therapy). The evidence for an empirically detected effectiveness of all these forms of therapy is not very high and often inconsistent. Nevertheless, this does not mean that these forms of treatment should not be used but that they should be selected on an individual basis to improve the well-being of patients by being adjusted to their needs. Potential combination topical therapy of anal fissure: development, evaluation, and clinical study†. Drug Deliv. 2018 Nov;25(1):1672-1682 Authors: Salem AE, Mohamed EA, Elghadban HM, Abdelghani GM Abstract To treat anal fissure, internal anal sphincterotomy may be associated with surgical risks and incidence of incontinence. Botulinum toxin injection into the anal sphincter is invasive and expensive. Headache and hypotension hindered topical treatment with glyceryl trinitrate. Greater patient compliance, potentiated efficacy, reduced side effects, and lower cost are the major advantages offered ...

Nieland, Dana M. Cairns, Rachel E. Pollard, Pedram Hamrah, David L. KaplanAbstractThe cornea is a valuable tissue for studying peripheral sensory nerve structure and regeneration due to its avascularity, transparency, and dense innervation. Somatosensory innervation of the cornea serves to identify changes in environmental stimuli at the ocular surface, thereby promoting barrier function to protect the eye against injury or infection....

Authors: Blanke F, Sachser J, Majewski M Abstract The treatment of chronic massive rotator cuff lesions remains challenging. Extensive reconstruction techniques as deltoid flap transfer as well as low invasive arthroscopic debridement techniques were established and showed good results. In present study 106 patients with massive rotator cuff lesions were treated by deltoid muscle flap transfer (n = 47 group I) and by arthroscopic debridement (n = 59 group II). Postoperative outcome was determined by amount of pain, range of motion, shoulder functionality according to Constant-Murley Shoulder Score and radiological ...

Peripheral nerve injury and inflammation leads to changes at the nerve injury site, including activation of resident and recruited peripheral immune cells, that lead to neuronal central sensitization and pain amplification. The prese...

Conclusion This randomized controlled trial shows that using compression gloves during the rehabilitation phase after distal radius fracture improves daily functioning and reduces adverse symptoms. These improvements, which are important in their own right, are also expected to aid in preventing the development of chronic conditions and disability. Evidence Level II Un-blinded prospective comparative study.

Abstract Pain is a significant problem in stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and is associated with other symptoms, worse health status and lower functional status. Not much is known about pain in unstable disease. The primary aim of the present study is to investigate prevalence, characteristics and relationships of pain in patients with COPD hospitalized for an acute exacerbation (AECOPD) and indicated for post-acute pulmonary rehabilitation (PR). This cross-sectional observational study included 149 patients (mean age 70.8 (±7.9) years, 49% male, mean forced expiratory volume in one seco...

ConclusionsIn addition to sleep, fatigue emerged as a key potential mechanism of multidisciplinary chronic pain treatment ‐related improvements, suggesting that interventions including elements which effectively target sleep and fatigue may enhance the efficacy of interdisciplinary chronic pain programs. This possibility should be evaluated in future research. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.
