Surgery for perihilar cholangiocarcinoma in octogenarians

We would like to compliment Akashi et al on a thorough analysis regarding the outcomes of surgery for perihilar cholangiocarcinoma (PHC) from the viewpoint of age.1 The authors showed that the average age of patients who undergo surgery for PHC has increased over the last decades, a trend that will likely continue in our aging society, and therefore the outcomes of surgery in older patients are of major interest. The authors show that surgery for PHC in octogenarians is feasible with similar morbidity and mortality as compared with younger age groups.
