Review of article: Obesity and Clotting:  BMI independently contributes to hypercoagulability after injury. J Trauma Acute Care Surgery. 2015 January;78(1):30-38

Trauma is a health issue of epidemic proportions and accounts for the majority of deaths in people aged 1 –44 years. Uncontrolled hemorrhage after injury is attributed to early death. Because of this, there is significant interest in understanding the postinjury spectrum of clotting dysfunction as a result of hypocoagulability or hypercoagulability. On presentation, one-third of severely injured and bleeding patients have acute traumatic coagulopathy with significant morbidity and a four-fold increase in mortality.
