The Impella Microaxial Flow Catheter Is Safe and Effective for Treatment of Myocarditis Complicated by Cardiogenic Shock: An Analysis From the Global cVAD Registry

Myocarditis complicated by cardiogenic shock remains a complex clinical problem. Myocarditis refers to heart-specific infectious or noninfectious inflammatory conditions with clinical manifestations ranging from mild nonspecific symptoms to cardiogenic shock.1 Therapeutic options for myocarditis are limited. Aggressive immunosuppressive regimens have not been shown to affect mortality or left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF).2,3 Transvalvular pumps (Impella; Abiomed, Danvers, Massachusetts) provide hemodynamic support4,5 by decreasing cardiac workload while increasing systemic mean arterial pressure.
