Generalized Epilepsies: Immunologic and Inflammatory Mechanisms

This article focuses on the inflammatory processes in patients with generalized epilepsies. We specifically review the data regarding West, Lennox-Gastaut, and Landau-Kleffner syndromes as they have generalized clinical or electroencephalogram features. And there is substantial evidence for a pathogenic implication of immune mechanisms in these epilepsies. Animal models and abnormalities in both cellular and humoral immunity support this hypothesis. They also appear to be particularly responsive to immunomodulatory therapies, which has raised the speculation that an unbalanced immune system may play an important role in the pathophysiology of these epileptic syndromes.

AbstractThe aim of this study is to evaluate the incidence of vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) in patients with febrile convulsion (FC). For this, patients that were diagnosed with FC in 2018 were retrospectively reviewed. Those with epilepsy, motor/mental retardation, or spina bifida were excluded. Mid-stream urine samples were collected in children who were toilet trained while sterile bags were used in the smaller. Urinary tract infection (UTI) was defined as ˃ 5 leucocytes/HPF in urinalysis and a subsequent positive urine culture (≥ 10.000 CFU/ml). Children with UTI were further investigated via voiding cystourethrogram...

AbstractIn Italy, medical grade cannabis (MGC) can be prescribed for different medical conditions, including drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE), once standard and approved therapies have failed, or caused non-tolerable side effects. Here, we present a retrospective case series report of five patients with DRE who started therapy with MGC. Authorized ISO 9001:2008 pharmacies prepared MGC according to Italian laws. Olive oil extracts (OOEs) were prepared following standard extraction protocols, and cannabinoids were measured on each OOE to check for successful extraction. After treatment with MGC, all patients reported a reduction...

This article intends to verify the association of dysfunctional beliefs of personality disorders with the executive performance in people with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME).MethodsFifty-two patients (35 women, 67.3%) with JME aged 18–50 yrs. (32.3 ± 9.7) were evaluated between May 2017 and April 2018 and compared with controls. All subjects were submitted to the Personality Beliefs Questionnaire (PBQ) (Beck &Beck, 1991; Savoia et al., 2006), Dysexecutive Questionnaire (DQ; Wilson et al., 1996; Macuglia et al., 2016), estimated intelligence quotient (IQ) using Vocabulary and Block Design tests, at...

nnataro Aguglia The diagnosis of psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES) by means of electroencephalography (EEG) is not a trivial task during clinical practice for neurologists. No clear PNES electrophysiological biomarker has yet been found, and the only tool available for diagnosis is video EEG monitoring with recording of a typical episode and clinical history of the subject. In this paper, a data-driven machine learning (ML) pipeline for classifying EEG segments (i.e., epochs) of PNES and healthy controls (CNT) is introduced. This software pipeline consists of a semiautomatic signal processing technique and a ...

We reported the case of a patient diagnosed with DLGNT who presented with language developmental delay and positive but subtle changes in imaging two years before the emergence of typical clinical symptoms. Few studies were conducted on early tumor symptoms due to the limited number of cases. We hypothesized that with the existence of pre-tumor symptoms, language developmental delay may be related to tumor. PMID: 32087090 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
