Immunologic and Inflammatory Aspects of Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a common neurological disorder affecting between 1 and 3% of the population with peak incidence in the extremes of life.1 While many structural, metabolic and genetic causes of epilepsy have been identified, a subset of cases without known or demonstrable cause is classified as idiopathic.2,3 As the knowledge of underpinning genetic mechanisms and central nervous system (CNS) immune dysfunction in epilepsies is constantly evolving, the group of cases currently diagnosed as “idiopathic epilepsy” is becoming increasingly narrower.
