ConclusionThe implantable shunt systems parameters were chosen before surgery in the surgical management of hydrocephalus in children with MMC are essential. This is important in order to prevent under or over drainage states, CSF leakage from the MMC sac. Management of hydrocephalus should be performed by considering MMC affecting craniospinal balance.
Use of off-label tissue graft materials such as acellular dermal matrix (ADM) for the in-utero repair of severe spina bifida (SB), where primary closure of the skin layer is not possible, is associated with poor neurological outcomes. Cryopreserved human umbilical cord patch (HUC) has regenerative, anti-inflammatory and anti-scarring properties, and has shown to provide watertight SB repair. We tested the hypothesis that HUC is a superior skin patch compared to ADM for reducing inflammation at repair site and preserving the spinal cord function.
Effects of continuous infusion (CI) of Lactated Ringers solution (LR) and replacement of the lost amniotic fluid (AF) with the LR during in-utero spina bifida (SB)repair surgery on the preterm birth remains unknown. AF nourishes the avascular amniotic membranes, replacing it with LR may cause preterm birth. We evaluated the effects of CI and volume replacement with LR or AF at the end of the surgery on the gestational age (GA) at delivery. Additionally, in-vitro studies were conducted to test the effects of dilution of AF with LR on human amniotic epithelial cells (HAEpiC).
