(Children's Hospital of Philadelphia) In a follow-up to the landmark 2011 study that demonstrated prenatal surgery for spina bifida has measurable benefits over surgery after birth for one of the most disabling neural tube defects, researchers have published new findings. These findings show significant physical and emotional benefits a decade later in school-age children who received corrective surgery in the womb for myelomeningocele, the most severe form of spina bifida.

Conclusion: Based on these findings, standardized and effective preventive physiotherapeutic and/or pharmacological interventions to tackle PF in spina bifida need to consider age-specific differences in occurrence and reoccurrence of fractures. What is Known:• Pathological fractures are common in patients with spina bifida aperta, and associated risk factors include high lesion level, immobilization and low bone density. What is New:• We first report a bimodal frequency distribution of pathological fractures in childhood (first peak 1–5 years, second peak 10–12 years) and link early-onset fracture occu...

AbstractThe goal of our study is to describe the prevalence of congenital anomalies (CA) in hospitals of the City of Buenos Aires, Argentina, according to two proxy variables of the socioeconomic level: health subsector, public (PUB) versus private/social security (PRI), and geographical location, northern (N) versus southern (S). The source of data was the National Network of Congenital Anomalies of Argentina (RENAC) (period 2010 –2016). From a total of 228,208 births, 4872 newborns with CA were detected (2.14%). The prevalence in PRI-N, PUB-N, PRI-S, and PUB-S hospitals were 1.59%, 1.91%, 2.20%, and 2.43%, respecti...

ConclusionThe implantable shunt systems parameters were chosen before surgery in the surgical management of hydrocephalus in children with MMC are essential. This is important in order to prevent under or over drainage states, CSF leakage from the MMC sac. Management of hydrocephalus should be performed by considering MMC affecting craniospinal balance.

Use of off-label tissue graft materials such as acellular dermal matrix (ADM) for the in-utero repair of severe spina bifida (SB), where primary closure of the skin layer is not possible, is associated with poor neurological outcomes. Cryopreserved human umbilical cord patch (HUC) has regenerative, anti-inflammatory and anti-scarring properties, and has shown to provide watertight SB repair. We tested the hypothesis that HUC is a superior skin patch compared to ADM for reducing inflammation at repair site and preserving the spinal cord function.

Effects of continuous infusion (CI) of Lactated Ringers solution (LR) and replacement of the lost amniotic fluid (AF) with the LR during in-utero spina bifida (SB)repair surgery on the preterm birth remains unknown. AF nourishes the avascular amniotic membranes, replacing it with LR may cause preterm birth. We evaluated the effects of CI and volume replacement with LR or AF at the end of the surgery on the gestational age (GA) at delivery. Additionally, in-vitro studies were conducted to test the effects of dilution of AF with LR on human amniotic epithelial cells (HAEpiC).
