TRIM9 and TRIM67 Are New Targets in Paraneoplastic Cerebellar Degeneration

AbstractTo describe autoantibodies (Abs) against tripartite motif-containing (TRIM) protein 9 and 67 in two patients with paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration (PCD) associated with lung adenocarcinoma. Abs were characterized using immunohistochemistry, Western blotting, cultures of murine cortical, and hippocampal neurons, immunoprecipitation, mass spectrometry, knockout mice forTrim9 and67, and cell-based assay. Control samples included sera from 63 patients with small cell lung cancer without any paraneoplastic neurological syndrome, 36 patients with lung adenocarcinoma and PNS, CSF from 100 patients with autoimmune encephalitis, and CSF from 165 patients with neurodegenerative diseases. We found Abs targeting TRIM9 and TRIM67 at high concentration in the serum and the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of a 78-year-old woman and a 65-year-old man. Both developed subacute severe cerebellar ataxia. Brain magnetic resonance imaging found no abnormality and no cerebellar atrophy. Both had CSF inflammation with mild pleiocytosis and a few oligoclonal bands. We identified a pulmonary adenocarcinoma, confirming the paraneoplastic neurological syndrome in both patients. They received immunomodulatory and cancer treatments without improvement of cerebellar ataxia, even though both were in remission of their cancer (for more than 10  years in one patient). Anti-TRIM9 and anti-TRIM67 Abs were specific to these two patients. All control serum and CSF samples tested were negative for ant...

Abstract In this work, the as-prepared V2O5 nanobelts can sensitively quench the fluorescence of nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) based on the inner filter effect (IFE). In the presence of ascorbic acid (AA), the fluorescence of N-CDs can recover through the redox reaction between V2O5 nanobelts and AA. Meanwhile, in the presence of both alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and ascorbyl-2-phosphate (AAP), the fluorescence of N-CDs can also restore since AAP can be hydrolyzed into AA by ALP. Under optimum conditions, the linear range for AA is from 0.01 to 2.5 μM with a detection limit of 3 nM and that for ALP is fr...

ConclusionsPhysical and psychological functioning, pain, fatigue and appetite loss had prognostic significance above and beyond clinical predictors in CRC. Routine monitoring of these PROs may allow earlier detection and amelioration of problems, which may improve quality of life and perhaps extend survival. More research is needed to determine prognostic value of PROs in early-stage CRC, and prognostic significance of changes in PRO scores.

ConclusionsThe experience of changes in taste was common yet highly variable in its presentation and resultant changes in food preferences. Taste changes did not always resolve soon after treatment completion. Future research should identify ways to manage this symptom in pediatric cancer patients.

Synchronous cancer in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) increases their morbidity and mortality after AAA repair. However, little is known about the history of cancer in AAA patients and its impact on mortality after AAA repair. We analyzed the incidence and type of cancer history in patients who underwent AAA repair and difference in short- and long-term mortality.

Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) is an evolving diagnostic alternative to contrast-enhanced computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and fluorescence angiography for the evaluation of vascular diseases. Microbubble contrast material allows imaging of blood flow in microvasculature beyond the resolution of standard imaging techniques and demonstrates potential for the evaluation of tissue perfusion. Several authors have investigated the application of CEUS in the evaluation of myocardial or skeletal muscle perfusion and tumor characterization.
