Impact of Bariatric Medical Tourism on US Health Care Utilization: A University Hospital Experience
Americans are engaging in medical tourism, international travel for medical care, for bariatric procedures. Bariatric tourism patients with complications may have inadequate continuity of care. Additionally, many insurance companies deny coverage for treatment of complications of operations done abroad without preauthorization. This can be personally and financially devastating for patients and costly for hospital systems. We evaluated the health care utilization of patients with complications of bariatric surgical tourism.
