Dietary inflammatory index and parameters of diet quality in normal weight and obese patients undergoing hemodialysis

Protein energy wasting (PEW) is a major concern in hemodialysis patients and associated with increased morbidity and mortality [1, 2]. Wasting originates from an interaction between insufficient dietary intake, inflammation, endocrine disorders, anorexia, oxidative stress, and other disorders. Inadequate dietary intake and inflammation are two major contributors of wasting in hemodialysis [3, 4]. Different oral or intradialytic parenteral nutrition supplementations may be required to the prevention and treatment of PEW in renal patients [5].
