Cyberbullying: concepts, dynamics, characters and health implications

High school junior Alexandra Valoras, a straight-A student, class officer and robotics whiz, nonetheless felt she wasn't ever good enough; hiding her despair behind a sunny disposition to the outside world, she ended her life before her 18th birthday. Jim Axelrod talks with the young woman's parents, friends and teachers about the signs that were missed; the private journals in which the girl wrote down strikingly uncharacteristic words of pain; and how Alexandra's mom and dad are bringing a message of awareness to other students. [If you are in crisis: Please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK...

We present a systematic approach to 1) adapt Natural Language Processing (NLP) solutions to screen with high sensitivity for reference to suicidal constructs in a large clinical ASD EHR corpus (230,465 documents), and 2) evaluate within a screened subset of 500 patients, the performance of an NLP classification tool for positive and negated suicidal mentions within clinical text. When evaluated, the NLP classification tool showed high system performance for positive suicidality with precision, recall, and F1 scores all > 0.85 at a document and patient level. The application therefore provides accurate outp...

Authors: Haney AM Abstract Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a potentially life-threatening behavior with significant public health implications that may potentiate suicide risk. Religiosity has been identified as a significant protective factor against suicide attempts, and more broadly acts as a buffer against negative mental and physical health outcomes. Whether religiosity may reduce risk for NSSI is unclear. To understand the nature of the association between NSSI and religiosity, correlations from 16 samples (total N = 24,767) were computed to evaluate the magnitude and direction of the association between NS...
