Conclusion: Short IPI is associated with anemia in pregnancy in Nigeria. Public health campaigns for improvement in uptake of family planning services and breastfeeding may help reduce the incidence of short IPI and anemia in low income countries.

AbstractIntroductionInduction of labor has become an increasingly common obstetric procedure. However, in nulliparous women or women with a previous cesarean section, induction of labor can pose a clinical challenge. Despite an overall expansion of medical indications for labor induction, there is little international consensus regarding the criteria for induction of labor, or for the recommended methods among nulliparous women. In this light, we assessed variations in the practice of induction of labor among 21 birth units in a nation ‐wide cohort of women with no prior vaginal birth.Material and methodsWe carried out a...

Abstract Global estimates for 2017 indicated that there were 295,000 maternal deaths, 35 per cent lower than in 2000 with a decline in global maternal mortality ratio from 342 to 211 deaths per 100,000 live births (World Health Organization (WHO) 2019). Maternal hemorrhage is the leading direct cause of maternal death worldwide, representing 27% (20-36) of maternal deaths ( Say L, et al. Lancet 2014). Multiple large retrospective population cohorts have identified risk factors invariably associated with maternal hemorrhage including mode of delivery, prolonged labor, chorioamnionitis, and twins among others (Brile...

Purpose: The purpose of this scoping review was to synthesize the literature on nursing support during the latent phase of the first stage of labor. In 2014, the definition of the beginning of active labor changed from 4 centimeters (cm) to 6 cm cervical dilation. More women may have an induction of labor based on results of recent research showing no causal increase in risk of cesarean birth with elective induction of labor for low-risk nulliparous women. Therefore, in-hospital latent phase labor may be longer, increasing the need for nursing support. Design: Scoping review of the literature from 2009 to present. Me...

The placenta and fetal membrane act as a protective barrier throughout pregnancy while maintaining communication and nutrient exchange between the baby and the mother. Disruption of this barrier leads to various pregnancy complications, including preterm birth, which can have lasting negative consequences. Thus, understanding the role of the feto-maternal interface during pregnancy and parturition is vital to advancing basic and clinical research in the field of obstetrics. However, human subject studies are inherently difficult, and appropriate animal models are lacking. Due to these challenges, in vitro cell culture-base...

Am J Perinatol DOI: 10.1055/s-0040-1713818 Objective Studies demonstrate shorter time to delivery with concurrent use of misoprostol and cervical Foley catheter. However, concurrent placement may not be feasible. If misoprostol is used to start an induction, little is known regarding the benefit of sequentially using Foley catheter. We examine obstetrical outcomes in women with Foley catheter placed after misoprostol compared with those only requiring misoprostol. Study design Retrospective cohort study of singleton pregnancies, intact membranes, and an unfavorable cervix (Bishop score of ≤6 and dilation...

Authors: Morgan N, Christensen K, Skedros G, Kim S, Schliep K Abstract Background: Stress-induced pregnancy complications are thought to represent a significant cause of maternal morbidity and mortality; little is known regarding types of stress most predictive of adverse outcomes. Methods: We used Utah PRAMs 2012-2014 data to evaluate links between preconception life stressors and prevalence of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) and pre-term labor (PTB) (births

CONCLUSIONS: Low-certainty evidence means we are not certain if there is any difference between probiotic and placebo groups in maternal hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, caesareans; and large-for-gestational-age babies. There were no adverse events reported by the trials. Due to the variability of probiotics used and small sample sizes of trials, evidence from this review has limited ability to inform practice. Well-designed adequately-powered trials are needed to identify whether probiotics may improve maternal blood glucose levels and/or infant/child/adult outcomes; and whether they can be used to treat GDM.
