Roles of hyperuricemia in metabolic syndrome and cardiac-kidney-vascular system diseases. Hyperuricemia is defined as a condition where the level of uric acid exceeds the normal range. The most well-known disease induced by hyperuricemia is gout. However, many studies have reported that hyperuricemia also plays important roles in cardiac-kidney-vascular system diseases and metabolic syndrome. Although hyperuricemia has been known for a long time, its pathophysiology remains poorly understood. In this review, we highlight studies on advanced pathological mechanisms for injuries induced by hyperuricemia, summarize epidemiological studies on hyperuricemia and its associated diseases, and take a brief look at hyperuricemia prevention.
