Suicidal thoughts and behaviour among South African adolescents living with HIV: can social support buffer the impact of stigma?

Adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) are a high-risk population for suicidal ideation and attempts. Worldwide, suicide accounts for an estimated 6% of all deaths among young people, representing the second leading cause of mortality among females and the third among males aged 10 –24 years (McKinnon et al., 2016; Patton et al., 2009). Youth suicide is therefore a major global public health concern, especially in low and middle income countries (LMICs), which are home to around 90% of the world's youth and account for over 75% of global suicide deaths (McKinnon et al., 201 6; UNFPA, 2014).
