11.2 Effective Mental Health Care for Asian American Families and Children: A Mother ’s Personal and Professional Perspective

Lecture presentation will be used to present the issues confronting the diverse group of Asian American families and children in the United States. This group has been termed the “model minority,” yet there are many barriers to obtaining effective mental health services. The Asian American population is growing rapidly and will in the future represent a larger proportion of the US population. Language and other barriers embedded in the cultures of origin, as well as a la ck of cultural competence of mental health providers in the United States, perpetuate a lack of effective mental health care, education of trainees, and research.
