15.3 Invisible and Unpredictable: Assessment of Unaccompanied Minors

In 2016 alone, there were more than 400,000 displaced and unaccompanied minors who entered the United States, according to the 2016 US Customs and Border Protection. Many studies have focused on documenting the experience of unaccompanied youth, but there are few clinical guidelines or recommendations on how to address their mental health needs. Assessment of this vulnerable group requires consideration of unique cultural constructs, drivers, and determinants of migration and an overview of strengths and needs.
