Balancing the Competitive Edge Among Young Athletes: Understanding Mental Health and Addiction Within This Population

Substance abuse, mental health conditions, and eating disorders are prevalent in young athletes, although they often go unrecognized. The purpose of this Clinical Perspectives is as follows: 1) to understand how young athletes may be prone to substance use and mental illness; 2) to review the effects that performance-enhancing drugs have on sports players; and 3) to learn how to recognize and treat substance abuse, eating disorders, and complications from sports-related head injuries.
