18.1 Sports-Related Head Injuries and Mental Health of Athletes

Sports-related head injuries and traumatic brain injury (TBI) in youth may result from a variety of causes, including motor vehicle accidents, falls, and incidental injury to the head. Increased attention has been given toward TBI and chronic traumatic encephalopathy. In this Clinical Perspectives, the audience will: 1) understand how to recognize sports-related head injuries; 2) identify mental health comorbidities associated with these conditions; 3) review treatment for these injuries; and 4) recognize potential clinical gaps in care.
