18.5 Managing Eating Disorders in Athletes

This presentation summarizes the literature that compares eating disorders, weight anxiety, and disordered weight-control behaviors among athletes compared with nonathlete control subjects. Participants will learn the following: 1) the unique risks and protective factors for the development of eating disorders among athletes; 2) the degree to which these factors stratify by sport type and gender; 3) key considerations for screening and diagnosis; and 4) treatment and preventative approaches for this population.
