19.1 Attending to the Needs of Victims of the Las Vegas Shooting Once They Returned Home

Incidents of mass violence have increased over recent decades, with more events culminating in large numbers of fatalities and injuries. Given the extent of the mental health, community, and social impact of mass violence among survivors and their families, bereaved family members, responders, and other helping professionals, we need to appreciate the complexities of these events and how best to support those impacted in the short and long term. For example, we need to appreciate how different communities might be impacted by such incidents, the impact and experiences of victims, and secondary stress that individuals and communities are exposed to afterward.
