43.3 Mental Health Services Delivery to Foster Care Youth Transitioning to Adulthood

Many mental health disorders, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and substance use disorder (SUD), are initially diagnosed between the ages of 18 and 25 years, and 75% of all mental illnesses occur by the age of 24 years. Combined data from the 2010 –2012 National Survey on Drug Use and Health indicate that 1 in 5 young adults (18.7%; age 18–25 years) had some form of mental illness in the past year and that 3.9% suffered from serious mental illness. Moreover, there are 2.2 million young adults with co-occurring mental illness and SUD, as w ell as 555,000 young adults with co-occurring serious mental illness and SUD.
