45.1 My Life as a Child Psychiatrist in the US Foreign Service, Department of State

I illustrate the complexity of professional career development for a child psychiatrist over the course of 40 years of practice. There are clearly both distal (eg, childhood experiences, birth order, youthful mentors, sociocultural zeitgeist, etc.) and proximal factors (eg, level of practice satisfaction, medical and mental health well-being, presence or absence of supportive relationships, etc.) that influence the vicissitudes of career development. Child psychiatrists often feel a need to review their career trajectory in their 40s and 50s.
