48.3 Complex Cases: Diagnostic and Behavioral Treatment Strategies in Tic-Related OCD

Tourette ’s disorder (TD) is a childhood-onset, neuropsychiatric disorder found in 0.3 to 0.8% of youth. Mental illness comorbidity is found in 50 to 90% of individuals, and although tics tend to wane into early adulthood, comorbid conditions such as OCD and ADHD may continue to impact functioning. Differe ntiating between tics and OCD compulsions can often be challenging, especially in cases of complex tics. Overlapping symptoms such as symmetry, touching, and “just right” compulsions found in tic-related OCD complicate the clinical picture.
