50.2 Neurobiologic Overlaps of Heavy Social Media Use and Substance Use Disorder

Discrete brain circuits underlie addictive behaviors. A cascade of neuroadaptations in corticolimbic brain networks are suggested to maintain problematic use patterns over time. Notably, many of these brain regions are continuing to develop during adolescence, enhancing vulnerability to risk taking and substance misuse. The goal is to identify overlapping neurobiological patterns of substance use and compulsive social media use in adolescents.
