67.5 Family Advocacy and Educational Rights of Visually Impaired Students

Parents of children with visual impairment (VI) are faced with many challenges. After parents receive the news that their child has a VI and/or other disabilities, parents go through several stages of adaptation. Searching for answers, researching information, and looking for support are just some of the ways that parents begin to adjust to these daunting tasks. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) ensures that students with VI are entitled to a “free appropriate public education from birth to age 21.” IDEA lays out the framework for the components of the students’ education.
