2.1 Neurobiological Underpinnings of Cognitive Development

Why are some people more proficient in cognitive skills than others? Insights into the biological bases of these differences came from post mortem and imaging studies that revealed positive associations between morphometry and intelligence in focal brain regions. However, most of the previous studies have considered each brain region in statistical isolation from the rest of the brain, although emerging evidence suggests that anatomical changes occur in a coordinated fashion across distributed brain regions during development.
