3.3 Making the Emergency Department Work for Youth With ASD: A Clinical Research Review

Youth with ASD access emergency services at higher rates than peers without ASD, yet emergency department (ED) staff members typically have limited experience and expertise in the emergency evaluation and crisis management of children and adolescents with ASD. As a result, youth with ASD and their families often have negative experiences of emergency care, including high rates of restraint and sedative medication. This presentation will focus on the evaluation and behavioral management of patients with ASD in ED settings.
