The German version of the Brown Assessment of Beliefs Scale (BABS): Development and evaluation of its psychometric properties

Lack of insight and delusional thinking are hallmarks of a series of psychological disorders such as psychotic disorders and body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the German version of the clinician-administered Brown Assessment of Beliefs Scale (BABS; Am J Psychiatry 1998;155:e102-e108), which consists of 7 items assessing the degree of delusionality in the individual's disorder-related belief (e.g., “The person behind me is staring at me”, “My nose looks disgusting”).

This study aimed to establish the prevalence of insomnia in youth with BDD and explore its impact on clinical outcomes. Sixty-six children and adolescents with BDD consecutively referred to a specialist clinic completed a range of clinical measures, including the Yale-Brown Obsessive –Compulsive Scale Modified for BDD-Adolescent Version (BDD-YBOCS-A), and the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI). Patients with clinical insomnia (ISI score ≥ 9) were compared to the rest of the sample on socio-demographic and clinical features. Fifty-six patients who received multimodal treatment were re-assessed post-treatme...

This study examined motives for drug use and clinical correlates of drug use motives in a sample of individuals with BDD and lifetime drug use, using the Drug Use Motives Questionnaire and 3 additional body image–specific drug use motives. As predicted, the Drug Use Motives Questionnaire coping motive was positively associated with attempted suicide and a lifetime DUD. All 3 body image–specific motives for drug use were also significantly associated with a lifetime DUD. In addition, they were the only variables that were significantly associated with greater severity of BDD. These results build on previous evid...

Conclusion: Among young Iranian adults, sociocultural attitudes towards appearances and BDD scores, as rated by experts’, were related, while SE was not. The shared variance between symptoms of BDD and sociocultural attitudes towards appearance was low, suggesting that other factors such as mating and career concerns together with social feedback might be more important in explaining symptoms of body dysmorphic disorders.

CONCLUSION: Based on these results, we propose conceptual and operational definitions of response and full or partial remission in BDD. A consensus regarding these constructs will improve the interpretation and comparison of future clinical trials, as well as improve communication among researchers, clinicians, and patients. Further research is needed, especially regarding definitions of full remission, recovery, and relapse. PMID: 31662124 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

When researchers from UCLA and the Laureate Institute for Brain Research in Tulsa, Oklahoma, wanted to test an app they created to measure body image perception, they went to the body image experts — fashion models.Sixty-five female models signed to professional modeling agencies in London were asked to step off the runway and into a laboratory to help researchers study Somatomap, a mobile and desktop app designed to research body image and ultimately to help doctors treat patients with eating and body dysmorphic disorders.Forthe study, published in the journal JMIR Mental Health, researchers also recruited 38 women ...

v A Abstract Our case report is on the use of electroconvulsive treatment (ECT) in an adolescent with Bipolar Disorder (BPD), Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and comorbid Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD). In our case, ECT was not considered at the first stage, but we encountered medication noncompliance and treatment resistance. Symptoms of body dysmorphic disorder completely disappeared after ECT, which is consistent with the literature. ECT is a treatment with a low side effect profile in treatment-resistant cases. In addition, it will be useful to increase the knowledge and experience of clinicians on ECT and to pro...

This study aimed to identify the prevalence and determinants of BDD among female adolescents in Jeddah, KSA.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted among female students in governmental secondary schools. Students presenting with abnormal health conditions were excluded. A multi-stage stratified sampling technique was used to select the target number of students (N = 495). BDD screening was performed using a BDD questionnaire.ResultsThe students’ mean (standard deviation) age was 16.78 (1.11) years, and the prevalence of BDD was 12.3% (95% confidence interval: 9.6%, 15.5%). Conclusions: Patients who underwent liposuction had a significantly higher total score of BDD-YBOCS than healthy volunteers matched by sex, age, and body mass index. Subjects with higher BDD-YBOCS scores had significantly lower serum leptin levels.
