First hospitalization for heart failure in outpatients with stable coronary artery disease: determinants, role of incident myocardial infarction, and prognosis

Heart failure (HF) is a major public health problem with a high mortality rate.1 Coronary artery disease (CAD) has been reported to be the predominant cause of HF.2 Numerous studies have analyzed HF early after myocardial infarction (MI), with a special focus on ventricular remodeling.3 –6 However, relatively limited information is available regarding HF development in patients with stable CAD. Previous analyses of patients with stable CAD enrolled in the Cholesterol And Recurrent Events (CARE) and Prevention of Events with an ACE Inhibitor (PEACE) studies showed that HF occurren ces over time had important prognostic consequences.
