Long-term functional outcomes of Roux-en-Y versus Billroth I reconstructions after laparoscopic distal gastrectomy for gastric cancer: a propensity-score matching analysis

ConclusionsRoux-en-Y reconstruction was superior to Billroth I reconstruction in terms of frequency of occurrence of residual food, bile reflux, remnant gastritis, and reflux esophagitis in the long term. Differences between the two methods became more evident as the follow-up period lengthened.

ConclusionFor junior learners, use of an LSO video improved knowledge and confidence in anatomy but did not translate to improved surgical performance in the operating room. Surgical videos are a useful adjunct and compliment hands-on technical teaching.

CONCLUSION: Compared with Billroth II reconstruction, uncut Roux-en-Y reconstruction is secure and feasible, and can effectively reduce the incidence of alkaline reflux, residual gastritis, and heartburn. Despite the incidence of recanalization, uncut Roux-en-Y should be widely applied. PMID: 28974902 [PubMed - in process]

This study was not an anomaly. There have been many papers published supporting these same ideas and it is not just confined to antibiotic use. Heartburn medication called Proton pump inhibitors are one of the most over-prescribed drugs today and absolutely wreak havoc on both human health and the health of intestinal bacteria. NSAIDS are another such drug. Of course there are situations where antibiotic use is justified and necessary but I have found the conventional medical community to be guilty of gross overprescription of these drugs. Patients are often given prescriptions for cold and flu when the reality is viral i...

Every time I come back to Africa, I’m reminded just how natural the health care is here. I recently watched one local herbalist cure a patient of chronic heartburn with a tea made from a popular root (more about that soon). Heartburn is a common disorder of the stomach caused by the overproduction of stomach acid. In America, mainstream medicine is likely throwing Big Pharma’s “treatments” at you — like proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs), which block the production of stomach acid. You might know these better as Nexium, Prilosec and Prevacid. But these PPIs have some pretty BIG downsides you&rsquo...

Abstract Background Billroth-I (BI) is a simple, physiological method of reconstruction following distal gastrectomy. In actuality, postoperative QOL is by no means favorable due to the high incidence of post-gastrectomy syndrome. The aim of this study is to assess the safety and efficacy of boomerang-shaped jejunal interposition (BJI) after distal gastrectomy. Methods Sixty-six patients with early gastric cancer underwent the BI procedure (n = 33) or BJI (n = 33) after distal gastrectomy, following which they were compared for...
