Validation trial for efficacy of ultrasonographic measurement method to predict ascitic volume using virtual ultrasonography

AbstractPurposeThe aim of this study was to clarify whether ultrasound quantitative methods were positively correlated with volume of ascites evaluated by whole abdominopelvic CT.MethodsSixty-eight patients with cirrhotic ascites were retrospectively analyzed. First, to confirm that virtual ultrasonography (VUS) is an alternative method to conventional ultrasound, 22 patients underwent both conventional ultrasonography and VUS. Second, the efficacy of US quantitative methods (3-point method, 4-point method, 5-point method, and Matsumoto ’s method) was confirmed by VUS in 68 patients. We assessed whether the ascites volume predicted by VUS corresponded with that calculated by 3D-CT. Of the 68 patients, 23 patients were analyzed before and after administration of tolvaptan.ResultsThe predictive volumes calculated by VUS were remarkably relative to those yielded by conventional US. Correlations between exact volume and those measured by VUS were significantly high (3-point method:r = 0.882,p

ConclusionComputed tomography examinations are a more reliable method for differential diagnosis of thyroid nodules than ultrasound examinations followed by fine needle aspiration biopsy. ObjetivoComparar exames tom...

We present a case-based review of abdominal postoperative complications, organized by organ system affected, including wound/superficial, hepatobiliary, pancreatic, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and vascular complications. Both general complications and specific considerations for certain types of operations are described, as well as potential pitfalls that can be confused with complications. Representative cases are shown using all relevant imaging modalities, including CT, fluoroscopy, ultrasound, MRI, and nuclear medicine. Management options are also described, highlighting those that require radiologist input or int...

Abstract Abdominal pain is a common cause for emergency department visits in the United States, and biliary tract disease is the fifth most common cause of hospital admission. Common causes of acute hepatobiliary include gallstones and its associated complications and multiple other hepatobiliary etiologies, including infectious, inflammatory, vascular, and neoplastic causes. Postoperative complications of the biliary tract can result in an acute abdomen. Imaging of the hepatobiliary tree is integral in the diagnostic evaluation of acute hepatobiliary dysfunction, and imaging of the biliary tree requires a multimo...

Abstract There is a wide variety of causes of diffuse lung disease in the intensive care unit patient, of which adult respiratory distress syndrome is the commonest clinical consideration. Plain radiography, computed tomography, and ultrasound can be used synergistically to evaluate patients with diffuse lung disease and respiratory impairment. Imaging is not limited to characterization of the cause of diffuse lung disease but also aids in monitoring its evolution and in ventilator setting management. PMID: 31731896 [PubMed - in process]

This study aims to predict fetal weight at varying gestational age in the absence of ultrasound examination within a certain accuracy. We consider that machine learning can provide an accurate estimation for obstetricians alongside traditional clinical practices, as well as an efficient and effective support tool for pregnant women for self-monitoring. We present a robust methodology using a data set comprising 4,212 intrapartum recordings. The cubic spline function is used to fit the curves of several key characteristics that are extracted from ultrasound reports. A number of simple and powerful machine learning algorithm...

High purity and crystallinity of the product was obtained in sonochemical route when compared to conventional methods. Morphological results showed arrow-like structures which are highly reliant on many experimental parameters such ...
