ConclusionRenal elasticity was correlated with microstructural findings of nephron hypertrophy. Measuring renal elasticity could help in detecting kidney disease.

CONCLUSIONS: This model demonstrated favorable short- and long-term clinical benefits associated with the use of ERC in patients with CKD Stage 3 and 4 with SHPT and VDI, suggesting ERC may be cost-effective from the Medicare perspective compared to paricalcitol. The ability to obtain peripheral intravenous (IV) access, and in a timely manner, is arguably one of the most important skill sets to be mastered by health care professionals. While skill and experience play a role in successful and timely vascular access, numerous pati...

Authors: Schlesinger A, Weiss A, Nenaydenko O, Koren-Morag N, Adunsky A, Beloosesky Y Abstract BACKGROUND: Statins and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) have beneficial effects on health outcomes in the general population. Their effect on survival in debilitated nursing home residents is unknown. OBJECTIVES: To assess the relationships between statins, SSRIs, and survival of nursing home residents. METHODS: Baseline patient characteristics, including chronic medications, were recorded. The association of 5-year survival with different variables was analyzed. A sub-group analysis of survival wa...

AbstractPurpose of ReviewTo summarize the literature regarding alterations in bone health in patients with glomerular kidney disease and highlight areas in need of additional investigation.Recent FindingsThere is mounting evidence that children and adults with glomerular conditions, with or without compromised kidney function, comprise a distinct subgroup of patients with unique risk factors for altered bone health.SummaryPatients with glomerular kidney disease are exposed to both disease-related and treatment-related factors that affect bone structure and function. In addition to chronic kidney disease –related risk...

The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of renal dysfunction on cardiac outcomes in patients with chest pain in an emergency department observation unit (EDOU). Methods: We conducted a 5-year prospective evaluation of patients evaluated in the EDOU for chest pain. We collected baseline information and data from the emergency department visit, EDOU stay, inpatient admission, and the 30-day period after presentation to the emergency department. We calculated glomerular filtration rate (GFR) using the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) equation. We stratified patients as having mi...

Publication date: Available online 14 November 2019Source: Clinica Chimica ActaAuthor(s): Mustapha ZendjabilAbstractGlycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) is the reference test for long-term glucose monitoring. However, HbA1c is not recommended in several situations such as hemoglobinopathies, pregnancy or chronic kidney disease. The quantification of serum glycated albumin (GA) can serve as an alternative in these situations. In fact, serum albumin may undergo structural changes by glycation which impacts on its function and plays a major role in the genesis of diabetes mellitus complications. GA can be measured accurately either on...

D'HaeseAbstractSuccessful kidney transplantation (partly) corrects the physiologic and metabolic abnormalities driving chronic kidney disease – mineral and bone disorders. At the same time, renal transplant recipients are exposed to immunosuppressive agents that may affect bone metabolism. Bone biomarkers have been suggested as surrogates of or adjuncts to bone biopsy and imaging techniques to assess bone health and to classify risk of bone loss and fractures. Bone biomarkers may be...
