Review of peripheral blood smear slides: assessment of the compliance with criteria used by analysts in a laboratory of a public hospital in Bahia, Brazil

Conclusion: The study evidenced the need of standardization of the criteria for hematoscopy used by analysts to obtain reproducible results that reflect quality and reliability by the prescribing physician. T herefore, it is necessary to invest in training the professionals involved in revision of blood smear slides.RESUMO Introdu ção: Recomendações em literatura e publicações de sociedades científicas têm proposto sistemas e níveis de classificação para comunicar alterações hematoscópicas no hemograma.

Conclusion: This study shows very low prevalence of STH among all age groups in Mwea, suggesting that long term SBD may also be benefitting the untreated groups in the community and thus the potential to achieve STH elimination in such endemic areas. PMID: 31186652 [PubMed]

The objective mentioned above is achieved in two ways. Firstly, a novel algorithm is developed to segment the nucleus and cytoplasm of white blood cell. Secondly, a model is built to extract the features and train the model. The different supervised classifiers are compared, and the one with the highest accuracy is used for the classification. Six hundred images are used in the experimentation. InfoGainAttributeEval and the Ranker Search method are used to achieve the featur e selection which in turn helps in improvising the classifier performance. The result shows the classification of the acute lymphoblastic leukemia int...

ConclusionThe results indicate that elderly people living in aged-care facilities are more likely to have Candidahyphae detected on PAS stained smears and have a higher Candida carriage rate compared to elderly living at home. This may be due to the presence of co-morbidities which led to the need for residential care and/or may be related to the rest home environment.

Cytology-based Papanicolaou test on and primary HPV screening have been widely used in the identification of cervical cancer and precancerous lesions, which is of great significance for the prevention and treatment of cervical cancer. Patients diagnosed as ASCUS/LSIL usually need follow-up because some of them may develop into CIN2+. The consequences of women positive for HPV vary from person to person; some of them may progress into cervical dysplasia, reversible forms of precancerous lesions, and eventually invasive cervical cancer. Therefore, it is necessary to establish an effective biomarker to triage different patien...

Background: Lower genital tract carcinomas that coexist with genitourinary malformations are rare. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinicopathologic characteristics and outcomes of patients with this rare joint condition. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinicopathologic characteristics and outcomes of these patients to analyze the associations among clinicopathologic features in this rare entity. Methods: The medical records of patients with carcinoma of lower genital tract combined with genital tract malformations who were treated at Peking Union Medical College Hospital (Beijing, China) between ...

Although single-agent or combination chemotherapy regimens have produced moderately high response rates in patients with advanced-stage SS, these responses are invariably not durable. Extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) is recommended as an immunomodulator treatment, offering better lif...

CONCLUSION: The results showed good agreement and a strong correlation between the rapid PAP and black rice extract stains. The advantages of black rice extract as a novel substitute for hematoxylin for nuclear staining include ease of preparation, local availability, and favorable nuclear staining properties. Further studies could also focus on comparing staining techniques in clinical samples. PMID: 31181873 [PubMed]

AbstractCancer cervix is diagnosed late in women due to anatomical inaccessibility of the area. Hence, a robust screening strategy will help detect carcinoma cervix early which will significantly decrease the mortality and morbidity due to this disease. We evaluated DNA methylation of three tumour suppressor genes p15, p16 and E-Cadherin on cervical smears to assess DNA methylation as a screening tool for detection of early cervical cancer in comparison to PAP smears. DNA was extracted from cervical smears of 20 cases and 30 controls. The DNA was bisulphite modified. Methylation specific PCR (MSP) was performed to assess t...

Though the cytologic criteria for diagnosis of these lesions have been refined to a great extent through the evolution of the Bethesda System for reporting cervical smears, still some challenges exist regarding an accurate recognition of glandular cell changes in c...
