Transthyretin for the routine assessment of malnutrition: A clinical dilemma highlighted by an international survey of experts in the field

Nutritional management begins with the assessment of nutritional status [1,2]. However, without a recognized gold standard to quantify protein –energy malnutrition (PEM) and without international consensus among experts, it is difficult for a common easy assessment of malnutrition and its severity to emerge. The issue is compounded by ongoing debate over the definition of malnutrition itself [1,3]. Transthyretin (TTR) may be a suitable m arker for assessing malnutrition and the efficacy of refeeding [4], yet there is no clear pattern of TTR use among experts in the field.
