When respect for our elders is ageism

“Oh, let me help you.” “I'll do that for you.” “Don't worry, I've got it.” “‘It's ok, it’ll be quicker if I do it for you.” “You shouldn't have to do that for yourself – let me help you.” How many of us easily recall the last time a colleague or we said one of these kindly meant phrases as a measure of respect for an older patient?
