The relationship between calcium (water) density and age distribution in adult women with spectral CT: initial result compared to bone mineral density by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry.

Conclusions The DCa(Wa) of lumbar vertebra by spectral CT demonstrated similar age distribution as BMD of DXA and could be used as a method of measuring the vertebral bone mineral density in adult women. PMID: 30249113 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The J.P. Morgan Healthcare conference runs every year in San Francisco, a big draw for the biotech industry, and many organizations take the opportunity to host events at the same time. Among these, the SENS Research Foundation has for the past few years hosted a pitch day in which biotech companies in the longevity industry, largely startups, present to that portion of the Bay Area investor community interested in funding the treatment of aging as a medical condition. I was there to present on progress at Repair Biotechnologies, and took some notes on the other companies as they talked about their work. Kimera Labs ...

ConclusionsHU measurements in CT scans have proven to be a feasible tool to additionally assess bone quality at the lumbar and sacral spine with good sensitivity, when compared with the gold standard DXA.Level of evidenceIII.Graphic abstractThese slides can be retrieved under Electronic Supplementary Material.

In this study, we considered whether perceived sleep quality is also associated with bone health in older adults. We explored this association in a cohort of 443 older community-dwelling UK adults. Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI); poor sleep quality was defined as  >  5 on this score system. Bone density, shape and microarchitecture were assessed using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) and high-resolution pQCT (HRpQCT). Thirty-seven percent of men and 43% of women had a PSQI score greater than 5, indicat ive...

The aging process is characterized by the chronic inflammatory status called “inflammaging”, which shares major molecular and cellular features with the metabolism-induced inflammation called “metaflammation.” Metaflammation is mainly driven by overnutrition and nutrient excess, but other contributing factors are metabolic modifications related to the specific body composition (BC) changes occurring with age. The aging process is indeed characterized by an increase in body total fat mass and a concomitant decrease in lean mass and bone density, that are independent from general and physiological flu...

ConclusionsThe newly developed 3D MOI enables distinguishing women with osteoporosis from those with normal BMD with good sensitivity and specificity.Clinical relevanceWhenever a CBCT scan is performed for specific clinical indications, a 3D MOI may be performed to qualitatively and quantitatively assess the condition of the mandibular cortex. This may be surely helpful to assess the osteoporosis status in the ageing population and more specifically in peri- or postmenopausal women.

This study assessed the magnitude and consistency of the longitudinal relationships between device-measured vigorous-intensity physical activity (VPA) and structural bone strength outcomes across adolescence to emerging adulthood. METHODS: Participants with 3 to 5 bone scans between the age of 11 and 19 years were studied (N = 439, 220 females, 1838 records). Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scans of the hip (hip structural analysis) and peripheral quantitative computed tomography scans of the tibia were obtained. Outcomes included femoral neck section modulus, femoral neck cross-sectional area, tibial Bone Strength I...

ConclusionsOur results suggest that hyperostosis of the posterior longitudinal ligament in OPLL may not be associated with bone strength and bone mineral status at the extremities.

Abstract Sarcopenia refers to the progressive and generalised loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength with a risk of adverse outcomes such as physical disability, poor quality of life and mortality. The present review explored the impact, diagnosis, prevention and management of sarcopenia in surgical and trauma patients. Recent evidence suggests that there are many factors contributing to its development other than age. Pathophysiology of sarcopenia is complex which makes its diagnosis difficult and there is no universal approach. It is a predictor of poor outcomes including post-operative complications, length ...

This study  aimed to evaluate associations of parity and breastfeeding history with postmenopausal bone loss. Early postmenopausal women from the Canadian Multicentre Osteoporosis Study were divided into three groups based on their reproductive histories: nulliparous (NP,n = 10), parous with   6 months breastfeeding (P-BF,n = 21). Women underwent dual X-ray absorptiometry and high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography imaging at baseline and after 6 years to evaluate bone mineral density (BMD), bone microstructure, and finite element-estimated failur...
