Hepatitis B Virus Infection and the Progress toward its Elimination

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a major global health problem and may cause acute, fulminant, chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, or hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).1,2 In May 2016, the World Health Assembly adopted the first Global Health Sector Strategy on Viral Hepatitis, 2016-2021. The strategy has a vision of eliminating viral hepatitis as a public health problem. The global targets are set to reduce new viral hepatitis infections by 90% and reduce deaths attributable to viral hepatitis by 65% by 2030 (http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs204/en/).
